This Guidebook is the work of People + AI Research (PAIR) initiative at Google.
PAIR advances the research and design of people-centric AI systems. We’re interested in the full spectrum of human interaction with AI, from supporting the engineers and teams building AI to understanding people’s everyday experiences with AI.
We’re a multidisciplinary team. Our goal is to do fundamental research, invent new technology, and create frameworks for design in order to drive a human-centered approach to AI. And we want to be as open as possible: we build open source tools that everyone can use, host public events, and support academics in advancing the state of the art.
The People + AI Guidebook recommendations are based on data and insights from over a hundred individuals across Google product teams, industry experts, and academic research. As our research continues to evolve, so will the way we approach product design. Expect updates to the Guidebook as the field of AI moves forward—think of it as a living document.
About our examples
Guidebook “aim for” and “avoid” examples are mockups of a made-up app. The examples are meant to illustrate best practices, not design patterns. (For UI pattern recommendations, check out Google Material Design, in particular their patterns for machine learning powered features.)
All recommendations and best practices are drawn from real Google products, industry examples, and academic research.
